"AMG’s Kick-Ass Brass! started life as a widely acclaimed sample CD of modern brass sounds. Now the same library has been expanded and housed in a virtual instrument, bringing a superb-sounding, self-contained brass section to any VST or AU-compatible sequencer. At the time of writing, only the VST version was finished – and it’s that which we review here – but the developer has confirmed that an Audio Unit version is imminent.
Kick-Ass Brass! features a total of six instruments: the original CD’s trumpet, trombone, alto and tenor saxophone, newly augmented by baritone sax and muted trumpe ...

Dark Side of the Groove - Neil Conti - Apple Loops
MacUser Review - 4 Stars
This collection of samples from the ex-Prefab Sprout sticks man is the most
expensive of those on test here, but it's not difficult to see why. Conti's
previous sample CDs have been largely down-tempo affairs, but on Dark Side
he ups the pace and aggression somewhat to produce a drum loop collection of
great originality and depth.
Beats vary from hip-hop grooves to drum and bass workouts via several
industrial excursions. Conti has also thrown in several longer jams that
organically build and change over ...

Pros: Nice organization, many loops in different styles, good quality
Cons: BPM not shown in loop name (only shown in folder name), pretty expensive for average user
Lukecage sure knows his hip-hop. Produced by Lukecage and manufactured by Advanced Music Group, this package provides you with over 500 loops in the hip-hop style.
Organization of CD: The nice thing about how AMG organizes their tracks is they actually organize them, which is welcoming. The layout of this CD is great. The CD is orgnaized into 78 different tracks by folders. They break each of the tracks into a few differ ...

5 Star Review
"Considering the kinds of cutting-edge dance music styles that are usually associated with Reason, the idea of a General MIDI Refill might appear to be a bit of a strange one. However, Propellerhead have already demonstrated that Reason is much more than a one-trick pony with the Orkester Refill. If Reason is your main music-making environment and your studio is not overly stocked with top-notch soundcards or hardware synths, then some facility for playing back basic MIDI files (commercial ones or those acquired via the Internet), might also be quite useful.
The CD is split ...

Punch ERM - WAV/REFILL - 4 Stars
Saul Stokes designs and builds his own synthesizers. Or at least he tries to. By his own admission, his engineering skills are less than perfect — the inner workings of some of his creations having shocked more conventionally minded engineers. But nevertheless they work — in the sense that they produce sound and they haven't burnt his house down yet!
To be fair, the irregular construction of these machines is the very thing that makes them interesting. These hybrid synthesizers, containing circuitry from Moogs, TB303s and even EMS VCS3s (not to mention wh ...

UltraMagnetic Beats - 5 Stars
Pros - Authentic hip-hop drum loops + Cool bass samples + Good melodies
Cons - None
"No sooner had Apple announced Soundtrack as a standalone application than AMG, the company behind countless sample CDs over the past decade, set to work recompiling some of its most popular titles to take advantage of the new Apple Loops format. We lent an ear to the first fruits of this enterprise.
Ultramagnetic Beats is billed as 'fresh from LA's Latin Gangsta hood'. As you might expect, this means lots of head-nodding drum loops and snaking basslines, but you also get p ...
