BLACKBEAT - 96th Street
Blackbeat 96th Street is the sequel to Freekee Jack Swing and the fifth in the AMG Street Series, so naturally it continues along the slammin' road to funkin' heaven. Loops are supplied as follows: naked, with bass, with voice, and finally with bass and voice. Here, the superb production of each loop shines through, making them ideal to sample and use as the backbone to any piece. The loops rarely stray far from the genre and all have a heavily programmed air about them - still this never did The-artist-formerly-known-as-Prince much harm.
The number of bars on some should have been halved for the sake of squeezing more onto the disc - a case of too little variation over too long a time. It would also have been nice to have some scrunched up loops just to introduce a bit more filth, but towards the end there are plenty of effects - including scratches, stabs and hits - to add that dirty element. Get a band in, jam along to some of these (especially the Caribbean ones) and you've got yourself a hit Probably.
First impressions are that 96th Street has a narrow appeal, but swingers, jammers, funksters and slammers should all find it hard to resist.
